Vol. 473 No. 3

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste Dumping.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

276 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine in respect of the dumping of toxic waste at Portaly, Dunmore East, County Waterford, if he has satisfied himself that the samples taken prior to removal were taken at the point from where the silt was removed; if he will pinpoint the exact location, within a metre, from where the samples were taken; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25024/96]

A total of five samples of material were taken around the perimeter of the syncrolift at Dunmore East Fishery Harbour Centre prior to the dredging of the bottom material. Two of those samples were taken from material which was subsequently removed. A sketch is being forwarded to the Deputy showing the locations at which the samples were taken.

The material has now been removed from the field at Portaly in which it was dumped and a firm of consultants have been engaged to examine and report on the environmental effects, if any, of the dumping.
