Vol. 473 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways Studies.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

17 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the stage of development and the studies which are taking place on the inland waterways in the Border region; when such studies will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22446/96]

There are two projects under investigation at present regarding inland waterways in the Border region.

In relation to the proposed extension of the Erne-Lough Oughter navigation from its current terminus at Belturbet, southwards to Killeshandra and Killykeen Forest Park, the Central Fisheries Board has been appointed to investigate the likely effects of the navigation project on the fishery and aquatic environment. The result of these investigations will form part of the overall environmental impact assessment.

The second project concerns the possibility of restoring the Ulster Canal. Tenders were invited from consultants and these are under consideration at present.
