Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Speed Reduction Devices.

Ivor Callely

Question:

297 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment his current understanding in respect of the most suitable device for speed reduction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1710/97]

Speed limits, as provided for under the Road Traffic Acts, are applied to all public roads. In addition, such traffic calming measures as they consider desirable to further reduce speed on public roads in their charge may be provided by road authorities under section 38 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994. The Act provides for the use of a very wide range of such measures and it is a matter for each individual authority to apply the type of device most suited to the circumstances at any particular location.

Under the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1993, which implement the requirements of an EU Directive, speed limiters are fitted to certain buses/coaches and heavy goods vehicles to prevent specific set speeds being exceeded.
