Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

422 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Justice the reason Regulation 14 gardaí have been refused training in law (details supplied) when non-gardaí have been provided with this training; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1205/97]

Regulation 14 of the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations 1988 provides for the recruitment of persons having special technical qualifications to the force. Members recruited under this provision do not have to fulfil all of the admission criteria required of members who are appointed to the regular uniform force.

The Garda authorities have informed me that Regulation 14 gardaí are given appropriate training courses depending on the nature of their duties. They are trained in various aspects of policing as their superior officers deem necessary and if it were felt that there was any deficiency in training, the in-service training unit at Harcourt Square would be requested to provide a suitable course.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that requests for training in relation to security and criminal matters, made by the non-Garda enforcement agency referred to, are normally acceded to in the interests of more effective liaison and interaction between the Garda Síochána and that agency.
