From funds at my disposal in 1996 I provided CAFE (Creative Activity for Everyone) with funding of £62,000 towards the implementation of the arts awareness intervention II programme. The aims of this intervention, which is targeted at the long-term unemployed, are to allow access to experience of the arts and also to allow participants the opportunity to gain skills which would connect them with other individuals and groups and with other opportunities for development. The value of the work being undertaken in this intervention has been recognised by the European Commission which has agreed to provide funding of some £330,000 towards the cost of the project under Article 6 of the European Social Fund Regulation 1995.
In addition, I also made a once-off grant of £2,000 available to the ATTIC community drama group in Galway city towards the costs associated with a production dealing with the issue of bullying, and £7,000 to the Feis Ceoil towards the cost of hosting the general assembly of the European Union of music competitors for youth.
