Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Recidivism Rates.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

175 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the rate of reoffending of former inmates of Oberstown Boys Centre, Oberstown Girls Centre and Trinity House, all near Lusk, County Dublin; and the number of reoffenders who serve a further custodial sentence in one of these institutions. [2303/97]

The recidivism rate among young offenders is estimated at 75 per cent. This level of reoffending is in line with experience in other countries such as the UK and Canada. Information on the number of reoffenders who serve further custodial sentences in one of the institutions mentioned by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department. I will arrange to forward this data separately to the Deputy as soon as possible.
