Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Educational Aids.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

180 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if she will consider the provision of a typewriter to assist a person (details supplied) in County Louth who suffers from optic atrophy, which means that her eyesight is at only 40 per cent causing her difficulty with handwriting; the educational aids which are available to this person who is due to go into secondary school in September 1998; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2015/97]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that a grant payment will issue to this child's school in the very near future to enable the school to purchase the typewriter in question. A scheme also exists for the provision of grants towards the purchase of equipment for pupils with a disability in second level schools.

Circulars and application forms regarding this scheme were issued to second level schools in May 1995. It would be a matter for the school to make an application under the terms of the scheme on behalf of an individual pupil.
