Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

184 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if she will make provision for additional staff to St. Vincent's school, Seatown Place, Dundalk, County Louth, due to the increasing workload, some of which has been caused by the inordinate social problems in the Dundalk area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2019/97]

The teacher allocation for a secondary school for a particular school year consists of the posts warranted by the enrolment at the end of the preceding September on the basis of the current pupilteacher ratio, together with approved ex-quota and concessionary posts.

The authorities of St. Vincent's school are being notified of their teacher allocation for the 1997-98 school year. The allocation includes ex-quota remedial and disadvantaged posts. It is open to the school authorities to submit an appeal for an increased allocation. Should such an appeal be submitted, it will be considered in the normal way.

Máirín Quill

Question:

186 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if she has reconsidered her position in relation to the appointment of a teacher under the breaking of the cycle scheme to St. Mary's on the Hill, Knocknaheeney, Cork; if so, if she will appoint such a teacher in this financial year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2058/97]

I have no proposals to include the school in question in the breaking the cycle initiative. As I have previously indicated to the House, the criteria under which schools were selected for inclusion in this initiative and the selection process itself, were devised and carried out by the Education Research Centre following detailed consideration of a range of indicators of educational disadvantage.

The data submitted by all applicant schools, including the school in question, was taken fully into account by the Education Research Centre as part of its selection process. However, I am informed by the Education Research Centre that, based on the information provided, the school in question did not qualify for inclusion in the scheme.

My decision to charge the Education Research Centre with the task of devising the criteria and selecting schools for inclusion in the initiative was taken in recognition of the complexity of the issues involved and the recognised expertise of the centre in this area.
