Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Tony Gregory

Question:

249 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will request the Garda to provide footpatrols along Seville Place, Dublin 1, especially from 3.00 p.m. onwards in view of the fact that cars are constantly under attack at this location. [2228/97]

The allocation of Garda personnel to different areas is the responsibility of the Garda authorities.

They have informed me that as part of operation Dóchas, which came into effect on 7 October 1996, two extra gardaí were assigned to the Seville Place/Sheriff Street area bringing the total number of gardaí assigned to policing this area to four.

In addition, the Garda authorities inform me that Seville Place is patrolled on foot by members from Store Street Garda station and these foot patrols are augmented by mobile patrols operating out of Store Street station and Fitzgibbon Street station. These units give a swift response to the public for Garda assistance.

The Garda authorities have informed me that there is no evidence that "cars are constantly under attack in this location" as claimed by the Deputy and they are satisfied that the measures currently in place are adequate to meet the policing needs of the area. They will, of course, keep the matter under review.
