Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Petroleum Prices.

Seán Power

Question:

271 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he is concerned at the fact that none of the oil companies are currently competing on the basis of price; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2041/97]

I am informed that there are variations in virtually all the prices charged by petroleum companies for their products. This information is based on the prices notified by the companies to the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications for the determination of the average retail, tax exclusive, prices in Ireland for inclusion in the European Commission's monthly oil bulletin.

If the Deputy can adduce evidence of concerted price fixing or any other breaches of the Competition Acts, 1991-96 on the part of the petroleum companies, I shall ask the recently appointed director of competition enforcement to investigate these matters urgently.
