Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Taylor Group Collapse.

Alan Shatter

Question:

57 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the reason the Garda authorities were unable to actively investigate the collapse of the Taylor Group until six weeks after newspaper reports of the collapse of the group and of the departure of the principal of the group from the State; the alleged obstacles, if any, which hampered a speedier investigation by members of the Garda Fraud Squad into allegedly missing funds following the collapse of the group; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1354/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation received its first complaint in this matter on 5 September 1996, following which an investigation was immediately commenced. As the Deputy will appreciate, the gardaí could not commence an investigation until they received a formal complaint against the individual concerned.
