Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

78 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice the amounts of compensation awarded to members of the public who have been injured or suffered loss or damage to property at the hands of an absconding inmate in the course of an escape attempt. [2158/97]

There is no record of compensation being awarded to a member of the public who has been injured or who suffered loss or damage to property at the hands of an absconding inmate in the course of an escape attempt. My Department's records show, however, that three claims have been settled in respect of personal injuries sustained by persons arising from assaults on them by offenders unlawfully at large. The total amount of settlement payments was £73,000.
