Vol. 473 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

79 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice her views on the adequacy of the training of gardaí assigned to the telecommunications area of the Garda Síochána. [23633/96]

Regulation 14 of the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988 provides for the recruitment of persons having special technical qualifications to the Garda. Members recruited under this provision do not have to fulfil all of the admission criteria required of members who are appointed to the regular uniform Garda.

The Garda authorities have informed me that under regulation 14 gardaí are given appropriate training courses depending on the nature of their duties. They are trained in various aspects of policing as their superior officers deem necessary and if it were felt that there was any deficiency in training, the in-service training unit at Harcourt Square would be requested to provide a suitable course.
