Vol. 474 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

49 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Finance when work on the flood relief schemes on the Mulcair river and its tributaries will commence; whether planning has been completed in respect of these schemes; and whether the necessary public notices have been published. [2672/97]

Two of the schemes in the current priority drainage programme involve proposals to resolve localised flooding in the Mulcair river catchment.

The preparation of one scheme, the Mulcair River (Ballymackeogh) certified drainage scheme, which will alleviate flooding in the Newport area is now complete and the scheme documentation will be on public exhibition from Friday 31 January until Friday 21 February at various centres in the area. Notices to this effect are scheduled to appear in the national daily newspapers and in the Iris Oifigiúil on Friday 31 January 1997 and in local weekly newspapers circulating in the area for the week ending 31 January 1997.

The public exhibition process will afford all interested parties an opportunity to submit their respective observations on the scheme proposals. These observations will be considered by the Commissioners of Public Works and where feasible the scheme amended accordingly before being submitted for confirmation to the Minister for Finance. Provided there are no major amendments required to be made to the scheme design after the exhibition period it is envisaged that the Ballymackeogh scheme will reach works stage in late April 1997.

The preparation of the second scheme, the Mulcair River (Cappamore) drainage scheme, is well advanced. It is expected that this scheme should commence public exhibition about the end of April, 1997 and follow the same procedures as outlined for the Ballymackeogh scheme.
