Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities.

Seán Haughey

Question:

116 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if the issue of improving employment and other opportunities for deaf people has been examined by the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2798/97]

The Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities has examined the issue of improving employment and other opportunities for all people with disabilities. Chapter 7 of its report addresses the issue of training and employment and its recommendations are aimed at bringing about an improvement in the employment prospects of all people with disabilities, including those who are deaf.

The commission also addresses the issue of technology and telecommunications and makes specific recommendations in the area of assistive technology. These recommendations are of particular relevance to the deaf community, dealing with such matters as the question of text telephones and the provision of sub-titles for television programmes. The question of making available sign language interpreting supports in public services is also addressed.

The report of the commission is being considered at present by an interdepartmental task force which I have asked to prepare a plan of action based on the report. It is anticipated that the plan will be completed around mid-year.

I will also be setting up a monitoring committee to oversee the implementation of the commission's recommendations. The monitoring committee will be representative of people with a disability, their families and carers and service providers as well as social partners and Departments.
