Question:117 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the total legal costs incurred by his Department in 1995 for professional legal services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2867/97]

Expenditure on legal services incurred directly by my Department in 1995 was of the order of £5,900.
Only in exceptional circumstances would my Department find it necessary to incur expenditure on professional legal services as such are provided in the normal course of events by the Chief State Solicitor's Office and the Office of the Attorney General.
