Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme.

Peter Barry

Question:

182 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the reason the leaving certificate vocational programme introduced by her Department on a pilot school basis is not acceptable to the National University of Ireland under the points entry system for third level education. [3023/97]

Traditional leaving certificate subjects, taken as part of the leaving certificate vocational programme, attract the same points for entry to third level education as they do in the established leaving certificate. Officials from my Department have held meetings with representatives of the regional technical colleges, the Dublin Institute of Technology and the universities at which details of curricular developments in relation to the LCVP were fully explained. Students sitting the LCVP take three link modules in addition to traditional leaving certificate subjects. The regional technical colleges have recently announced their acceptance of the link modules for points purposes for LCVP candidates in 1997. A decision from the universities on this matter is awaited.
