Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Refurbishment.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

183 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education if she will expedite matters in relation to ongoing difficulties which two schools (details supplied) in Dublin 9 are experiencing with a new heating system in view of the fact that these difficulties were notified to her Department in September 1996 and the matter has not been resolved; and if she will ensure that there is no further delay in this regard. [3024/97]

The question of resolving the issues outstanding is a matter for the chairperson of the board of management and the consulting engineer in the first instance. A consulting engineer employed by the school authorities oversaw the heating improvements at the school to which the Deputy refers. Following installation of the new boiler, problems were identified which required extra works.

The nature of these extra works is such that they are best carried out during the summer holiday period. Due to factors outside his control, the consulting engineer was unable to arrange to have these works carried out before the end of the summer holidays in 1996. I understand that the consulting engineer has recently been in contact with the chairperson of the board of management and has arranged to visit the school in the near future to discuss this matter further.
