Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - French Investigation Procedures.

Tom Kitt

Question:

198 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Justice the steps, if any, she is taking at EU level to improve investigating procedures into the death of Irish citizens abroad, namely the tragic death of a person (details supplied). [3001/97]

As regards the case referred to by the Deputy, I am informed by the Garda authorities that they have provided all necessary assistance to the French authorities in their investigation of this matter. The matter has been under investigation by the French authorities but to date they have not charged anyone in connection with the death. In late 1996, I did communicate my concerns about the length of time the French investigation was taking, that is over two years to the Minister for Justice in France.
