Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Death Inquest.

Seán Haughey

Question:

199 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice the outcome of an inquest which was held on 22 January 1997 into the death of a person (details supplied) on 1 March 1996 in Mountjoy Prison; if a copy of the medical report in relation to this person which was prepared by the prison authorities can be made available to his mother; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3002/97]

In relation to the case raised by the Deputy, I am informed that at an inquest on 22 January 1997, the jury, having heard all the evidence before it, recorded a verdict of death by suicide. The jury also added a rider to the recommendation and said that prisoners confined in protection cells in Mountjoy Prison should be put under special supervision. It should be noted that where prisoners are in protection cells, they are monitored every 15 minutes or more if deemed necessary. The only report of which I am aware in this matter is one furnished by a medical doctor at the request of the city coroner for his inquest on the deceased. It is to the coroner that any request for the release of such reports should be referred in the first instance.
