Vol. 474 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rent Review.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

286 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make an equitable decision in respect of the rent review being sought in respect of the granting of a renewal of a foreshore lease at Belmullet Sea Angling Club, County Mayo on the basis that the club is a non-profit making organisation, engaged in the promotion and marketing of sea angling tourism in north Mayo and that the funding of the reclaimed dock area, the subject of the rent review, was financed through voluntary fund raising efforts by the club; if he will take into account the remote location of the club and the resultant difficulties of ensuring its continuing viability and its ability to attract tourists to this remote area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2747/97]

I said in my reply to Question No. 299 on 3 December last that I would consider the amount of the rent review on receipt of the lessee's best offer supported by convincing reasons why it should be accepted.

This remains the position. The information supplied to date by the lessee is inadequate to enable a decision on the matter to be reached and the Department has sought additional information.

I will have due regard to the points made in the Deputy's question, as well as other representations which I have received, in arriving at my decision and I will let the Deputy know the outcome.
