Question:38 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the progress, if any, which has been made regarding the review of the EU sheep regime; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3036/97]
Written Answers. - Sheepmeat Quota.
The EU Commission has now completed a review of the operation of the EU sheepmeat quota regime and presented a report to the December Council of Ministers. The report finds that the quota system has operated satisfactorily and no amendments to the regime have been proposed. However, the EU Commission has undertaken to examine certain proposals which I have made in relation to the effects of the sheepmeat regime on the environment.
