Vol. 474 No. 4

Written Answers. - Decentralisation of Valuation Office.

Donal Moynihan

Question:

89 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether it would make better administrative sense to decentralise the bulk of the Valuation Office staff to the four provinces where most of their work is located. [3308/97]

The bulk of the commercial rateable valuation base of the country is centred, in fact, on the greater Dublin area. The four Dublin local authorities alone account for 46 per cent of the total commercial valuation base. The commercial valuation base of counties Louth, Meath, Kildare, Wicklow and Dublin together amount to 54.5 per cent of the total. Since there is no comparable concentration of commercial property in any other part of the State, I am not satisfied that a sound case exists, on the basis of work load, for the Deputy's suggestion.
