Vol. 474 No. 4

Written Answers. - Taxation of Harbour Authorities.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

93 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Finance if he intends to withdraw the exemption from corporation tax from harbour/port authorities who currently benefit from this exemption, in his consideration of an amendment to section 343 of the Income Tax Act, 1967 in the Finance Bill; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3312/97]

No decision has yet been taken on what changes are required in the tax treatment of harbour authorities arising from the Harbours Act, 1996, which provides for a restructuring of the main harbour authorities as commercial enterprises. The matter is currently being examined by my Department in consultation with the Department of the Marine in the context of this year's Finance Bill. This examination will include a review of the exemption provided under section 343 of the Income Tax Act, 1967.
