Question:

136 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the number of applicants for the first time buyers grant; the number of payments by county and in total in 1996; the amounts paid in each instance; the amount of the grant in each year since 1990; the criteria in relation to building specifications applicable; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3511/97]

In 1990, the new house grant payable was £2,000. This was increased to £3,000 in the 1993 budget, in respect of cases where a contract to purchase or build a house was made on or after 25 February 1993.

To qualify for a new house grant, a house must be constructed in accordance with the technical standards set out in the Department's explanatory memorandum on the grants, HA1, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.
