137 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if a nationwide survey has been carried out regarding the total estimated amount of transient travellers living in the State at any one time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3544/97]

Returns from local authorities on the annual count of traveller families carried out on 24 November 1995 show that there were 278 transient families.
