Question:144 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment if 50,000 baby salmon were killed in the Inniscarra Lake, County Cork, in 1996; and the causes of this particular fish kill. [3625/97]

I have no function in relation to the investigation of this incident which, I understand, occurred in August 1996 at the ESB hatchery in Carrigadrohid. I also understand that the fish concerned were held in land-based rearing tanks and that investigations carried out by Cork County Council found no evidence to suggest that the incident was connected in any way to the quality of the water in the River Lee which supplies the hatchery.
