Vol. 474 No. 6

Written Answers. - Study of Irish Exemption.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

160 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she will grant an exemption from having to learn Irish to a student (details supplied) in County Cork who is dyslexic; and if her attention has been drawn to the fact that a recommendation has been made to the parents of the student in this regard. [3508/97]

Exemption from the study of Irish may be granted to pupils under certain circumstances which are outlined in Department Circular 12/96. Copies of this circular are available on request from primary administration section 2, Department of Education, Athlone, County Westmeath.

Parents or guardians of pupils with a specific learning disability such as dyslexia who wish to apply for an exemption are required to supply a psychologist's report as evidence of the disability.

Applications should be sent to the principal of the school who has delegated authority for the granting of exemptions.
