Vol. 474 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Education Review Committee.

Mary Wallace

Question:

165 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the current status of the implementation committee on the report of the Special Education Review Committee; and the number of meetings held by the committee in the past 12 months. [3528/97]

A departmental task force was established to examine the recommendations contained in the Special Education Review Committee report, with a view to drawing up a phased action plan for their implementation.

The task force has completed its assessment of the range of measures required across the entire spectrum of special needs in order to give effect to the recommendations in the report of the committee. The task force has not met in the past 12 months.

Significant progress has already been made in implementing the measures in question and this process is continuing within the constraints of resource availability. I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 238 of 17 December 1996, which sets out the range of measures taken to date.
