Question:204 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the cost per unit in respect of each of the 160 extra prison places which have been provided in 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3713/97]

One hundred and sixty-one prison places were provided in 1996 at St. Patrick's Institution, Mountjoy Health Care Unit, the Curragh Prison and Castlerea Prison Unit A. The total cost of the contracts for the works involved was £4.6 million approximately. Accordingly, the capital cost for the provision of each of these prisoner places was £28,570.
