Vol. 474 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment.

Michael Bell

Question:

27 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the numbers originally recruited under the current five year term of engagement; the terms and conditions under which these soldiers were recruited; and the subsequent revisions, if any, in this regard. [3518/97]

In 1994, 500 personnel were enlisted into the Permanent Defence Force for a term of five years. A further 200 personnel were enlisted in December 1996, also for a term of five years. Other than age and height requirements, there has been no change in the conditions of service between the 1994 and 1996 intakes.
