Vol. 475 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

99 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí currently involved in traffic work in relation to Operation Freeflow. [4803/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that all members of the Garda Síochána on uniform duties have, as part of their normal policing function, a requirement to enforce the law and regulations relating to traffic matters. In the context of Operation Freeflow, certain members of the force attached to the traffic department as well as some members attached to local stations have been especially tasked to perform enforcement duties for certain times of the day and at particular locations where their efforts can have the greatest effect in maintaining the flow of traffic. As numbers can vary from day to day a precise answer to the question is not possible.
