Vol. 475 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Transport.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

100 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to authorise gardaí to use their own cars in the execution of their duty, particularly visiting the elderly in rural areas where there is no patrol car available; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4749/97]

The allocation of Garda vehicles and the use by members of the force of their private vehicles on duty is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that divisional officers may authorise members to use their private motor vehicles on special tours of duty and in instances of an urgent and important nature as covered by Garda regulations.

They also inform me that where a Garda station does not have transport permanently allocated to it, vehicles are provided, as the need arises, from within the district-divisional transport allocation.
