Vol. 475 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prisoner Releases.

Tony Gregory

Question:

103 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, further to her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 184 of 27 February 1996, if either of the prisoners referred to have since been released; and, if so, the length of the sentence served. [4807/97]

One of the prisoners referred to by the Deputy is a male offender serving a six year sentence with the last three years suspended and is due for release on 16 May 1998.

The other prisoner is a female offender serving a five year sentence with the last 40 months suspended. She is due for release on 16 May 1997. This prisoner was pregnant when she was committed to prison. As her confinement approached she was granted temporary release on 4 June 1996, conditional on her residing in a mother and baby home. She is currently still on renewable temporary release and resides with her baby at that home. This arrangement is in place for health and safety reasons related to overcrowding and other problems at the female prison.
