Vol. 475 No. 4

Adjournment Debate Matters.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Ring — the need to instruct the Western Health Board to appoint a dentist for the Belmullet area, County Mayo, either in a temporary or permanent capacity, in view of the delays in dental treatment for young people in the area; (2) Deputy Lawlor — the situation facing teachers who devoted part of their career to underdeveloped countries in Africa and are now facing a threat to their full pension entitlements despite previous assurances that their overseas service would be fully recognised for both incremental and pensionable purposes; (3) Deputy Flaherty — the urgent need to resolve the industrial relations problems in the Department of Education in light of the cancellation of the applied leaving certificate assessments which affected 3,000 students; (4) Deputy Shortall — the need to put the home help service on a proper footing in order to ensure standardisation of service and rates of pay; (5) Deputy Seán Ryan — the effects of the phasing out of duty free facilities in 1999 and the need for the Government to reactivate this issue within the EU; (6) Deputy O'Donoghue — the failure of a new sewage treatment plant in Dingle, County Kerry to treat the effluent from local fish processing factories and whether an explanation will be sought from the consultants engaged in planning the scheme; (7) Deputy Nealon — the impending closure of Geevagh post office, County Sligo without any notification to old age pensioners and other users and the need to retain this service in view of the fact that this area is now participating in a Government pilot scheme, ACE, on public services in rural areas; (8) Deputy de Valera — the serious situation in County Clare due to the lack of remedial school teachers; (9) Deputy Molloy — if an investigation has been carried out at Carlow Regional Technical College on part-time teacher and temporary whole-time teacher contracts which have not been reviewed for this academic year resulting in severe loss of monthly income.

The matters raised by Deputies O'Donoghue, Lawlor, de Valera and Molloy have been selected for discussion.
