Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Seán Haughey

Question:

203 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education if she will extend the free third level education scheme to mature students; if so, the cost involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4900/97]

Under the fees initiative, tuition fees are payable in respect of eligible students, including mature students, who are attending full-time undergraduate courses, which must generally be of at least two years duration, at approved third level institutions.

Repeat students and students who are pursuing a second period of undergraduate study at the same level do not, in general, come within the definition of an eligible student. However, second chance students, who having attended but not completed approved courses are returning to pursue approved courses at the same level following a break of at least five years, are eligible under the fees initiative.
