Vol. 558 No. 4

Written Answers. - International Driving Permit.

Michael Ring

Question:

340 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Transport if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo, who has an international driving licence as issued by the State of Israel and recognised by Ireland, has to do a theory test and practical examination to get an Irish driving licence, or whether this person can renew their international permit here, without an examination. [24373/02]

Temporary visitors to Ireland who hold a national driving licence or an international driving permit may drive here for the duration of their visit. Where the validity period of the national licence expires during the temporary visit, the person may seek a visitor's licence, which is issued by the Automobile Association. Persons who hold a national driving licence or an international driving permit, issued as in this instance by the State of Israel must, on taking up Irish residence begin the process of obtaining an Irish driving licence by passing the driver theory test and then securing a provisional driving licence.
