Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

225 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, which has been made to resolve the situation referred to in Parliamentary Question No. 178 of 3 December 1996, by Deputy Sargent. [5183/97]

The selection and enrolment of pupils in second level schools is, in the first instance the responsibility of individual schools. In cases such as this, my Department's inspectorate endeavours, by a process of consultation with school management, to have the pupil in question placed in a school in his locality. These efforts, which by their nature can take some time, are ongoing in this case and every effort is being made to find an appropriate placement.

I should mention that in endeavouring to find a suitable placement for this pupil the parents were advised of initiatives to be taken which included making contact with a number of schools in the locality. However, the family decided not to avail of all of these initiatives.
