Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - Information Society.

Ivor Callely

Question:

259 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the progress of the steering committee of his Department which was charged with the responsibility of producing a policy and strategy on information society; his views on whether public libraries should undertake an information society awareness programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5148/97]

In January 1996, I established a steering committee with terms of reference to examine the main features of the information society, with a view to elaborating a strategy and action plan for Ireland. It is hoped to publish the report of the committee in the near future. Awareness was one of the issues addressed by the committee. It is important that all citizens should be aware of the implications and potential of the information society. I would welcome any contribution that the public libraries can make to any awareness programme.
