Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - St. Michan's Church, Dublin.

Joe Costello

Question:

117 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if his attention has been drawn to the hazardous state of the roof of St. Michan's church owing to the damage caused by the shelling of the Four Courts in 1922 and the recent damage to the crypt by vandals; if he will make a contribution to the estimated cost of £270,000 for restoration work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4921/97]

An application has been submitted to my Department under Phase II of the Cultural Development Incentives Scheme in respect of renovation work to St. Michan's church. A detailed assessment of all applications received, including the application in respect of the St. Michan's church project, is ongoing at present. Following the completion of the assessment process, the advisory committee for the scheme will make recommendations to me regarding the level of funding, if any, that should be offered to individual projects. The purpose of this process is to ensure that the best projects, taking all factors into account, emerge and are offered support. I hope to be in a position to announce details of successful projects in the very near future.
