Vol. 475 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Liam Aylward

Question:

131 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for the Environment if he will have arrangements made to have finance made available under a remedial works scheme to Kilkenny County Council to allow urgent work to be carried out to a number of council houses which have substandard kitchens and whose occupants have been waiting a number of years to have these improvements carried out. [4832/97]

There are no funds at my disposal from which assistance could be provided for works of the kind mentioned. The management, maintenance and improvement of their dwellings is the responsibility of local authorities, to be financed from their own revenue resources.

Under the remedial works scheme, funding made available to local authorities relates to the carrying out of structural works to designated housing estates. Some £2.8 million has been paid to date under the scheme to Kilkenny County Council in respect of its estates at Newpark Close, Kilkenny, and Brandon Park, Graiguenamanagh.
