Question:

47 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education her views on the importance of public libraries and the benefit of our public libraries in advancing educational information, information technology, computer, Internet and other such information; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5149/97]

The Deputy will be aware that responsibility for public libraries in the function of the Minister for the Environment. I am very much aware and appreciate that public libraries perform an important role in providing educational resources to the community and, in the process, enhancing awareness of the educational developments in all areas including information and communication technology.
