Vol. 475 No. 5

Written Answers - Public Library Projects.

Ivor Callely

Question:

121 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the recent Library Association of Ireland information day (details supplied); if his attention has further been drawn to the needed investment which is required; his understanding of the required total funding in each of the years from 1997 to 1999; the actual funding and the likely additional funding which may be made available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5276/97]

I have received the Library Association of Ireland document "Public Libraries 2000" which contains the association's views on public library development. Capital expenditure on the public library service comes from the national lottery; the amount allocated is decided each year as part of the Estimates process. The allocation for public libraries and local archives for 1997 is £2.68 million.
