Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Máirín Quill

Question:

148 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education her views on whether a school (details supplied) in County Kerry is in a substandard condition and requires urgent attention; the reason this school is not on a priority list for replacement in 1997 in spite of the fact that it was on a priority list for 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5676/97]

I am aware of the urgent need for new accommodation at the school referred to by the Deputy. I included the proposed new school in my Department's 1996 capital programme. Inclusion of the project in the capital programme allows the planning work to be undertaken.

My Department's architectural staff expect to complete the planning work for the scheme shortly. However, due to financial constraints I am not in a position to allow the immediate invitation of tenders for the project.

I will consider this project together with a number of other urgent projects for a phased release to tender later this year.
