Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prosecution Statistics.

Joe Walsh

Question:

251 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of people prosecuted for the illegal use of angel dust; the number of people sentenced in this regard; and the number of people awaiting prosecution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6057/97]

Since the beginning of 1996, 39 persons have been prosecuted and convicted for offences relating to the illegal growth promoter, clenbuterol, otherwise known as "angel dust". Sentences of fines and, in some cases, terms of imprisonment were imposed by the courts. In a further 29 cases, files have either been transmitted to the Chief State Solicitor or summonses have issued.

The alleged and proven offences involved in these 29 cases and in those so far disposed of by the courts relate to possession of clenbuterol, administration of clenbuterol, illegal movement of animals and obstruction of officers engaged in the enforcement of veterinary medicines legislation.

While recognising that a small minority of persons are involved in criminal activities in this area, I want to reiterate my absolute commitment to eliminating the problem once and for all. My Department will continue to vigorously pursue those suspected of committing offences involving clenbuterol.
