Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Compensation for Nazi Victims.

Michael McDowell

Question:

37 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to proposals to seek compensation for victims of Nazi slave labour policies; whether Ireland has made any representations to the German Government in this regard; if his attention has further been drawn to the proposals of a person (details supplied) in County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5758/97]

I am not aware of the specific proposals referred to by the Deputy concerning compensation for the victims of Nazi slave labour policies.

It is my understanding that a federal compensation law, the Bundesentschädigungsgesetz, was enacted in Germany in 1956, inviting claims from victims of injustice under the Nazi regime. The deadline prescribed in that legislation for the receipt of such claims was 1969. There is also a provision for Jewish claimants who did not meet this deadline to apply for compensation through the Jewish Claims Conference.
