Vol. 475 No. 7

Written Answers. - Seaside Resorts Scheme.

Matt Brennan

Question:

45 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance when Strandhill, County Sligo, will receive designation status under the pilot renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5954/97]

The pilot renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July 1995 for a three year period. This new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of an experimental nature. It must therefore be applied on a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy.

The selection of the 15 resorts was made in order to give an even spread around the coast of designated resort areas. Until the scheme is firmly established and the experience from the pilot scheme can be assessed, it would be inappropriate to consider including any additional resorts. However, those areas seeking inclusion in the scheme have been noted and will be borne in mind in the context of any future review of the scheme.
