Eric J. Byrne

Question:

59 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if he is in receipt of a report by the National Validation Board on Social Work Qualification and Training; if so, if he will release this report for public debate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5664/97]

Limerick East): I requested the National Validation Body on Social Work Qualifications and Training to examine the issue of B Soc Sc graduates in the public health service and to make recommendations to me. The body reported on 20 November 1996 and, following examination by my Department of the advice received, it was decided that additional detail was required on a number of issues.

The body has recently been requested to supply the necessary follow up information. Therefore, I am not in a position to make any further comment at present other than to say that it is not intended at any time in the future to release the management advice sought in the form of a report for public debate.

The specific details supplied by Deputy Byrne in this particular case relate to a social worker in Dublin Corporation whose qualifications are a matter for the Minister for the Environment in the first instance.
