Vol. 476 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

84 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the procedures, if any, which are available to school authorities to assist them when necessary maintenance or repair works are required and they are faced with the option of temporary closing the school due to the lack of required moneys. [6383/97]

The responsibility for maintenance and repair work at schools rests with the school authorities, i.e. the manager of the school or the relevant vocational education committee. Funding for this purpose is provided to schools as part of the annual capitation grant.

It is also open to schools to apply to the Department for additional capital funding for improvement works. In such cases, resources are allocated as circumstances warrant.
