Question:

267 Dr. Moffatt asked the Minister for Defence the ten highest amounts paid in 1996 in respect of the petty officer car allowance for the FCA; the number of officers paid under this allowance; and the average amount paid. [7443/97]

The ten highest amounts paid in 1996 to officers of the FCA by way of milage allowance in respect of the use of their privately-owned motor cars on official business are as follows:— 1. £4,823; 2. £4,099; 3. £4,060; 4. £3,882; 5. £3,735; 6. £3,640; 7. £3,368; 8. £3,301; 9. £3,230; 10. £3,147.

Payments under this heading were made to a total of 152 officers in 1996 and the average amount paid was £1,696.
